Sida's Help Desk for Democractic Governance & Human Rights in Africa

Helpdesk Services

The Helpdesk is  designed to assist the Africa Department and the relevant Embassies in Africa with democratic governance and human rights issues. This can cover a broad range of subject areas, including:

  • Local Democracy and Decentralisation
  • Political Institutions, Political Participation and Pluralism
  • State-building, State Capacity and Public Administration
  • Public Financial Management
  • Aid Effectiveness including Results Based Aid and Results Based Financing
  • Human Rights Systems, Defenders and Rule of Law
  • Non-Discrimination
  • Freedom of Expression and Media
  • Human Rights Based Approach

It is envisaged that the helpdesk will be most useful for formulating, implementing, monitoring/following up, reviewing, and reporting about strategies for a particular country or result area or contribution portfolios or specific contributions;

Tasks can be carried out as desk studies or as field assignments, depending on the requested service. Types of support include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support to writing reports or other documents
  • Support for making presentations
  • Expert participation in seminars or discussions
  • Participating in short-term missions
  • Providing comments (written or oral)
  • Providing advice, training or guidance to Sida and the embassies in Africa
  • Developing methodological guidance
  • Providing support and advice to co-operation partners on how to integrate/strengthen aspects of democratic governance and human rights in programmes and projects.
