Study Visit: Technical Assistance for Promoting Gender Equality in Education Turkey

Technical Assistance for Promoting Gender Equality in Education is an EU funded Project, being implemented by a consortium led by British Council in partnership with SIPU International and other partners. The purpose of the project is to promote gender equality for girls and boys in schools, and to implement equality and gender sensitive approach throughout the education system.

During 11-15 of April a delegation from the project visited Stockholm. The delegation from Turkey observed how Sweden’s Education Act and Discrimination Act is being translated into educational practices through meetings with Committee of Education at the Swedish Parliament, National Agency for Education (Skolverket), Stockholm City’s Department of Education, Friends Foundation and Swedish Women’s Lobby. Specific attention was payed to the gender equality initiatives in the municipality of Gnesta, famous for their work with gender sensitive and norm critical approach in education, using the example of Frejaskolan.

The delegation also attended the Nicolajgården pre-school in Stockholm and observed their teaching methods of avoiding discrimination and incorporation of gender neutral learning.

To learn more about a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination and bullying in Swedish schools the delegation visited the Royal Ballet School.
