The Millennium Challenge Corporation and the Government of Lesotho have entered into a Millennium Challenge Compact for Millennium Challenge Account assistance to help facilitate poverty reduction through economic growth in Lesotho.
This assignment was part of the Private Sector Development support from the MCC and was implemented within the Land Administration Reform Project and aimed to systematically regularize certain areas of land in Lesotho. The scope of work was regularisation of 46,000 parcels, i.e . formalisation of informally occupied land, provision of legal aid and mediation, public outreach in (peri) urban areas in Maseru, Mazcnod, Maputsoe and Hlotsc. The assignment aimed to include local authorities, political and traditional leaders in the process of mapping land to show the boundaries and ownership of land parcels and create and distribute leases for these parcels which were to be registered and distributed to the rightful occupants.
